Title
sound proof box.

Problem Scenario

I am going to try to see what type of material would block sound. I am going to do this because i want to see if i could listen to music in my room with out my parents hearing it.

Broad Question

What effects do different materials have on muting the sound of music.

Specific Question

what are the impacts of using foam, cotton, sponges, and fiber glass.

Hypothesis

foam will stop the noise because people use it to block out sounds in sound proof rooms, then sponges, then cotton, then the last thing that i do not think will work good is fiber glass.

Variables

Independent Variable:

the different materials that I use.

Dependent Variable:

how much noise is measured.

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

measured with nothing in front of it compared with something in front of it.

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

decibel

General Plan

i am going to do the experiment at home, i am going to do it in my room so it could not get broken or get moved. i am going to build a box, on one side i am going to drill holes, when i do the experiment i am going to put a different material each time over the holes to see if it blocks the sound. some of the problems that i think will happen is that there will be cracks in the wood, so if there was i could fix it by sealing the cracks with tape or glue. I do not think that there is anything dangerous about this project.

Potential Problems And Solutions

there was no problems building the box.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

there was no safety concerns.

Detailed Procedure

Get enough wood to build a 12x6 box·
Nail pieces of wood together to form a rectangular 12x6 box
Drill 4 holes in the top of the box close together in a circle so they form one big hole
Put a small speaker inside the box
Put any type of material on top of the holes
Turn the speaker on
Use a decibel meter to measure the sound coming out of the box
Collect data

Abstract

I made a box out of wood. I put four holes in the top of the box. I put a speaker inside the box and turned it on. I had a decible meter to measure the sound output from the box. Then I put a material on top of the holes in the box. The materials I used were; sponge, foam, fiberglass, and cotton. I measured the sound that came out and I collected the data. Cotton was the best at blocking the sound from coming out of the box. Fiberglass was the worst at blocking the sound.
